Persecution: He is Coming, Ep. 8

WATCH

If you study the history of Christianity, especially the first centuries of the Christian era, you will notice the sad fragments of stories no one would love to experience. Persecution, a somber thread woven throughout the tapestry of time, stands as a testament to the unwavering resolve of believers and a stark reminder of the imminent return of Christ.

In the early days of Christianity, persecution was rampant, with nearly all the Twelve Apostles facing hostility and martyrdom for their allegiance to Christ. Despite the threat of death, they adamantly refused to cease proclaiming the gospel of His kingdom. Jesus, in His foresight, both warned and comforted them, preparing them for the trials ahead. In John 16:1-4 and Matthew 24:9, He foretold the persecution His followers would endure, affirming that it would be a sign of the times.

Persecution is hostility and ill-treatment, especially on the basis of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or political beliefs. Centuries may have passed, but the specter of persecution still looms, casting its shadow over believers worldwide. In our context, many Christians have been persecuted because they believe in Christ. Some have even sacrificed job security for their faith, unwavering in their commitment to honor God’s commands.

Yet, amidst the turmoil, Jesus’ words echo through the ages, reminding us not to falter in our faith. Tribulations and hardships, He assures us, are an inevitable part of the Christian journey. Standing firm in the face of adversity, we bear witness to the enduring conflict between righteousness and sin, love and hatred, and truth and falsehood.

Jesus does not present to His followers the hope of attaining earthly glory and riches, and of having a life free from trial, but He presents to them the privilege of walking with their Master in the paths of self-denial and reproach, because the world knows them not.

But fear not, for in the midst of persecution, we find strength and solace in Christ. His promise of blessedness to those persecuted for righteousness’ sake (Matthew 5:10) resonates with enduring hope, offering comfort in the midst of affliction. As we navigate the battleground of spiritual warfare, we are reminded that perfect peace is found in Him alone. He has said, “As thy days, so shall thy strength be.” “My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Deuteronomy 33:25; 2 Corinthians 12:9.

Phillips Brooks once wisely remarked, “Do not pray for easy lives; pray to be stronger people!” Indeed, through persecution, we discover a reservoir of inner strength and resilience, enabling us to weather life’s fiercest storms. Even in the face of betrayal and familial discord, Jesus assures us that standing firm in faith leads to true life (Luke 21:16–19).

The pages of history are replete with tales of persecution, but they also bear witness to the triumph of the human spirit infused with divine grace. Though Satan may inflict physical pain and suffering, he cannot touch the soul anchored in Christ. Like those who have gone before us, we can endure, confident that our light afflictions pale in comparison to the eternal glory that awaits us.

I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” “Our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” Romans 8:18; 2 Corinthians 4:17.

(Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing. E.G. White)

Let our prayer be one of solidarity with Christ’s suffering, knowing that through it, we are refined and made worthy to stand before the throne of God. As we persevere in faith, let us echo the words of the Prophet John, envisioning a future where victory is ours, and we stand before God, our robes washed white in the blood of the Lamb.

He says, “I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory, … stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are Thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are Thy ways, Thou King of saints.” “These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple: and He that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.” Revelation 15:2, 3; 7:14, 15.

In closing, let us stand firm, undaunted by the fires of persecution, knowing that our faith will ultimately prevail. Share your experiences of overcoming persecution in the comments below or send your stories and prayer requests to info@fochariministries.com. Until next time, stay blessed.
