In Matthew 24, Jesus unfolds to His disciples the signs heralding His return and the end of the age. These signs, prophetic markers, not only foreshadowed the destruction of Jerusalem but also illuminate the events preceding His ultimate return. Among these signs, Jesus foretold the rise of false messiahs, wars, conflicts, a heartless society, and natural calamities. Moreover, He warned of the persecution awaiting believers, even within their own ranks (Matthew 24:9–10).

Throughout history and even today, believers have faced the wrath of a heartless society and have been persecuted for their faith. Acts 14:22 reminds us that it is through many trials and tribulations that we must enter the kingdom of God. 2 Timothy 3:12 warns that all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. Despite these challenges, Jesus promises in Matthew 5:10–12 that those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake will be blessed and will inherit the kingdom of heaven. Notably, Jesus solemnly declared, “Because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12, ESV).

A glimpse into the historical context of Judea just before the destruction of Jerusalem vividly illustrates the accuracy of Jesus’ words. Rampant iniquity, marked by massacres, extortion, and assassinations, characterized the societal landscape. Echoing this sentiment, Paul’s letter to Timothy paints a chilling picture of the moral decay prevalent in the last days. People, consumed by self-love, greed, arrogance, and disregard for others, epitomize a loveless existence (2 Timothy 3:1–4). Isn’t this the stark reality we witness in our world today? The agape love, the divine love of God, has grown cold.

The term “love of God” encompasses both God’s love for humanity and humanity’s love for God. Romans 5:5 illustrates God’s outpouring love bestowed upon us through the Holy Spirit. Conversely, 1 John 5:3 elucidates our expression of love for God through obedience to His commandments. Mr. W.E. Vine, in The Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, Vol. III, p. 21, poignantly captures the essence of agape love, defining it as God’s profound and unwavering affection towards undeserving individuals, igniting in them reverence for the Giver and a compassionate love for fellow beings.

Humanity, devoid of merit, basks in the benevolence of God’s love. Christian love, as Mr. Vine elucidates, transcends mere sentimentality; it seeks the welfare of all and refrains from inflicting harm. However, even within our congregations, this love has waned. Therefore, Paul’s exhortation to persevere in faith and fellowship gains greater significance as the Day of Christ draws near (Hebrews 10:25).

Christian Love, whether exercised towards a brethren, or towards men generally, is not an impulse from the feeling, it does not run with the natural inclination, nor does it spend itself only upon those whom some affinity is discovered. Love seeks the welfare of all, Romans 15:2, and works no ill to any, Romans 13:8-10, love seeks to do good to all men, and especially towards them that are of the household of faith, Galatians 6:10.

Amidst the prevailing spiritual lethargy, Jeremiah’s admonition echoes loudly, reminding us of the inherent deceitfulness of the human heart. Yet, there is hope. God promises a transformative renewal—a new heart and Spirit, inscribed with His laws and devoted to Him (Hebrews 8:10, Ezekiel 11:19). Hence, introspection becomes imperative. 2 Corinthians 13:5 urges us to examine our faith, ensuring its authenticity, for therein lies the assurance of God’s love within our hearts.

Let our prayer resonate with that of Paul, that our love may abound in discernment and righteousness, bearing the fruit of Christ’s righteousness to the glory of God (Philippians 1:9–11). Despite the prevailing callousness of society, let us daily endeavor to share the love of God with those around us. For in spreading love, we not only reflect the character of Christ but also sow seeds of eternal hope in this heartless society.

As we navigate through the heartlessness of our surroundings, let us be beacons of love and hope. Cultivating this love of God requires intentional effort and action. Jesus Himself commands us to love one another as He has loved us (John 13:34). This involves showing kindness, forgiveness, and compassion to those around us. Galatians 5:22–23 describes the fruits of the Spirit, which include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. By cultivating these qualities in our lives, we can better reflect God’s love to others.

Let our love radiate, guided by the God of hope who fills us with joy and peace, so that through His power and grace, we may abound in hope. Remember to like, share, and spread the message—perhaps, in doing so, we may save a life for eternity.
